Complex ultra-modulated metallic textures

Ring of Doom is a library of all ring modulation synth sounds with a metallic, robotic quality and even a menacing, sci-fi sound. Ring modulation is a form of amplitude modulation where 2 signals are combined, and the output is both the sum and difference of their frequencies. The result creates wild sideband frequencies like nothing else.

Ring of Doom sounds

Ring of Doom uses samples of ring modulated sources and then synthesizes them further with the SampleTank engine and effects for an aggressive-sounding, ultra-modern library of pads, sweeps, bells, leads and basses.

The origin of Ring of Doom

The hardware synthesizers used in this collection are extensive: Modular Moog, ARP String Ensemble, Mellotron M400S, Prophet VS, PPG Wave, Roland JX-10, Yamaha TX816, and even a Fairlight CMI.

More tech talk

For most of the sounds, we used a Moogerfooger MF-102 Ring Modulator pedal. But to create the most useful samples, we used the CV input on the Moogerfooger to modulate the internal carrier oscillator to track the keyboard.

So it isn’t just amplitude modulation with a fixed carrier frequency; the carrier oscillator actually moves up the keyboard, changing frequency along with the modulator signal. The modulator is the external signal that gets fed into the Moogerfooger, being the hardware synths in this case.

Expand your soundscapes

With surreal atmospheres, bells, pads, sweeps, leads and basses, Ring of Doom brings deeply complex and unconventional sounds.
